The 2013 Rookie from the Year talked about every thing from his roots in soccer to the Colorado Rapids’ roster evolution – as well as his increasingly intense Ellie Goulding fandom.

WASHINGTON – “Third-year professional” and “longest-tenured player” ordinarily never go hand in hand. But for Colorado Rapids midfielder Dillon Powers, that’s his uncommon reality.
After earning Rookie in the Year honors because the Rapids returned for the playoffs in 2013, Powers has been among the few constants amid an organizational overhaul more than the past two years. The evolution began when club legend Pablo Mastroeni took more than from Oscar Pareja as coach, and also the club has due to the fact moved on from a young core – which featured the likes of Clint Irwin, Shane O’Neill and Deshorn Brown – to leave Powers because the only remaining player in the 2013 knockout round loss to Seattle.
“It’s often type of sad to determine a few of your teammates move on, particularly guys that you’ve created connections with,” Powers stated on the Purpose USA podcast. “It takes a whilst to create a connection with players and chemistry. I believe that has, for me, probably been the hardest a part of the transition of players, but I believe we’ve tried to establish far more of a core group.
“We might not happen to be acquiring the results last year, but we had been nonetheless developing and understanding a great deal from what we didn’t do well final year, and the factors we did do properly. I am hunting forward to continuing with this group and maintain locating these connections.”
Whilst the Rapids are coming off back-to-back years on the outside hunting in at the playoffs, the recent additions of Shkelzen Gashi, Jermaine Jones and Tim Howard have brought the buzz back to Colorado. In Powers’ mind, the Rapids now have extra high quality than at any other point in the course of his MLS tenure.
“We’re slowly beginning to develop a culture here,” Powers said. “That’s been sort from the focal point of this season. I assume we have the guys to do it, and I consider one factor we choose to do is be an incredible group at dwelling, a team that higher presses, a team you happen to be not going to choose to play, a group which will make games ugly but score a great deal of goals. I believe we’re starting to find out who we are a little bit bit, and that is going to help us get some get some additional results this year.”
